Author’s Choice with H.R. Boldwood
Please welcome H.R. Boldwood to Author’s Choice.
Dear readers, here’s where you get to play along. The author will tell us two truths and one lie (ed comment –I randomized the order). At the end of the questions, we’ll reveal what really happened. Remember, we write crime fiction, so lying is in our nature . . .
Two Truths, One Lie
Truth or Lie? I know how to snow ski.
Truth or Lie? I was a member of the US Table Tennis Team that visited China during the ‘Ping Pong Diplomacy’ era.
Truth or Lie? I was a nationally-ranked Table Tennis player as a teenager.
Eight Quick Questions
Now for some fun insight into today’s author. Here are eight forced choice questions.
1. First draft: longhand, keyboard, or dictation? I use a combination of long hand and keyboard that ends up in a Word manuscript.
2. Plotter, pantser, or plantser (that chaotic middle ground)? I’m a plantser who uses a beat sheet outline.
3. Editing as you go, or vomit draft first and fix it later? I always edit as I go. It helps me get Allie’s banter down the way I hear it in my head.
4. Writing snack: sweet, salty, or "I forget to eat"? Anything salty or sweet, but chocolate rules my heart.
5. Character names: meticulously researched, stolen from real life, or whatever sounds right? My names are researched, found in the Big Book of Baby Names, and stolen from real life. Coming up with names is half the fun!
6. Writing space: coffee shop chaos, library quiet, or home sweet home? I usually write in my office but sometimes in the family room.
7. Writer's block: push through, step away, or "it's not real"? Shush, don’t jinx me. It’s real all right. Shiver…
8. Reading your own work aloud: love it, tolerate it, or would rather eat glass? I enjoy reading my work aloud. In fact, that’s part of my internal edits before sending my MS to the editor.
About the Book
Enough about you, let’s turn to three questions about your book.
Q: If your main character in this novel showed up at your door right now, what would be the first thing they'd say to you (and would it be a complaint)?
A. Allie Nighthawk would ask me for some ratchet straps. (You have to read the book.) Of course, I don’t own any ratchet straps, so Vinny’s duct tape fiasco ensues.
Q: What's one thing you hope readers take away from this book?
A. This is the fifth book in the Corpse Whisperer series. While I hope readers enjoy the chills and the laughs as always, I hope they see real growth in the Allie Nighthawk character. I put a great deal of thought into that when I wrote the novel.
Q: What question did you want me to ask, and what is your answer?
A. What’s next on the horizon? The Greenstreet Mysteries! A new mystery series featuring snarky Sydney Greenstreet, a down-on-her-luck Vegas PI. Coming late 2026.
The Big Reveal
Now let’s see how good a sleuth (or guesser) our readers are. Please reveal all.
The lie is that I was a member of the US Table Tennis Team that visited China during the ‘Ping Pong Diplomacy’ era. Many moons ago, I was a nationally-ranked Table Tennis player, winning both national and state championships in both singles and doubles. I did learn how to snow ski, however, I wasn’t very good at it, and I spent more time lying in the snow than skiing through it.
Here’s a blurb for and some links where you can find HR Boldwood’s latest:
Book Blurb
Whisperer Rising is Book Number Five in the Corpse Whisperer series, featuring Allie Nighthawk, the best of the bad-ass zombie hunters. As Allie tells it:
“With the Z-Virus spreading and the rotter population exploding, someone had to ante up to save the world. I won the lotto. Imagine my delight. But I have another ‘niche’ talent. I can raise the dead. To pay the bills, I subcontract my services to the City of Cincinnati dropping deadheads and solving cold case crimes.
Zombies are kind of my thing—but when demons, deadheads, and villains all crash the party at once, even I might be in over my head. A synthetic virus is creating super-zombies with no cure, the body count is climbing, and the city’s circling the drain. Guess who’s on cleanup duty? Yours truly.
As if saving the world from the walking dead wasn’t enough, someone’s set up shop inside my skull. My thoughts aren’t my own, my instincts are scrambled, and trusting anyone feels like betting on a three-legged racehorse.
Between political backstabbing, straight-up murder, and my very real fear of losing my mind, I’m running out of time. If I can unmask the jerk pulling the strings, maybe I’ll save the day. But if I do, there’s still one ugly question left—do I have what it takes to put him down for good?
