Information we collect
You can visit this site without telling us who you are. We collect personal information only when you choose to give it to us, plus the basic technical information every website records.
- Newsletter signup. Your email address and, if you provide it, your name. We have several signup pages; all of them work the same way.
- Purchases. When you order a signed paperback, PayPal sends us your name, email address, and shipping address so we can fill the order. We never see your card or bank details.
- Comments on the Author's Choice blog (/blog2). Your name and email address. Your name appears publicly with your comment. Your email address is never published.
- Comments on the older blog (/blog). That blog is hosted on Blogger, a Google service. We do not collect your name or email there. Google handles those comments, including spam filtering and CAPTCHA checks, under Google's privacy policy.
- Email you send us. Whatever you choose to include.
- Server logs. Our hosting provider, Hostinger, automatically records technical information such as your IP address, browser type, the pages you request, and the time of your visit.
How we use your information
- To send the newsletter you signed up for.
- To fill, ship, and keep records of your orders, including sales tax records.
- To answer your email.
- To display and moderate blog comments.
- To ask readers and buyers for reviews, either directly or through the newsletter. If you'd rather not be asked, ignore the request or tell us, and we'll stop.
- To keep the site secure and working properly.
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information.
How long we keep it
We keep personal information only as long as necessary for the purposes described in this policy, then delete or anonymize it:
- Newsletter data (MailerLite): kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it.
- Purchase records and shipping addresses (PayPal): kept as required by accounting and tax laws and to fulfill orders or resolve issues.
- Blog comments: kept with the post unless you ask us to remove them.
- Correspondence: kept as long as needed to respond and for reasonable backup, then deleted.
- Server logs: kept by Hostinger according to its own schedule.
Who we share it with
We share personal information only with the services that help us run the site and fill your orders, and only what each one needs:
- Hostinger hosts the website.
- MailerLite manages newsletter signups and sends the newsletter.
- PayPal processes purchases.
- Google hosts the older blog on Blogger.
We may also release information when the law requires it, or to protect our rights, property, or safety or that of others. We do not run advertising, and we do not share visitor information with advertisers.
Cookies
Cookies are small files a website stores in your browser. We use only:
- Essential cookies that make our signup forms (MailerLite) and checkout (PayPal) work. MailerLite's script loads on every page of the site so that our signup forms work wherever they appear. MailerLite may also use cookies or similar technology to confirm deliveries and measure whether newsletters are opened.
- Affiliate cookies (Amazon Associates), set by Amazon only if you click an affiliate link.
We do not use analytics or advertising trackers. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings.
Affiliate links and third-party sites
As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. If you click an Amazon affiliate link, Amazon's privacy policy applies to what happens there.
This site links to other websites, including booksellers, PayPal, and social media. Those sites have their own privacy policies, and we are not responsible for their content or practices.
How we protect your information
- The site uses encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS).
- Our hosting provider, Hostinger, scans the site regularly for malware and security vulnerabilities.
- Payments are processed entirely by PayPal. Card and bank details never reach our servers.
- Only we can access the personal information we hold.
If a data breach affects your personal information, we will notify you by email within 7 business days.
Your rights (including visitors outside the US)
We are based in the United States. The services listed above may store and process your information in the United States and in other countries. Wherever you live, you may ask us to:
- tell you what personal information we hold about you;
- correct it;
- delete it;
- send you a copy of it; or
- stop using it for marketing.
Email jmj@jamesmjackson.com with your request, and we will respond within 30 days. You can unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time using the link at the bottom of every email. If you live in the European Union or the United Kingdom, you also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
Do Not Track
We do not respond to "Do Not Track" (DNT) browser signals. There is no industry standard for how websites should react to them, so our site does not change its data collection when a DNT signal is present. Because we do not use analytics, advertising, or behavioral tracking, the only cookies involved are the essential and affiliate cookies described above.
California Online Privacy Protection Act
CalOPPA requires websites that collect personal information from California residents to post a privacy policy. In keeping with it:
- You can visit our site anonymously.
- A link to this policy, including the word "Privacy," appears at the bottom of every page.
- We post any changes to this policy on this page and update the date at the top.
- You can change your personal information by emailing us.
Children's privacy
This site is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If we learn that we have, we will delete it.
Email and the CAN-SPAM Act
We send newsletters only to people who sign up and confirm their subscription (double opt-in). In keeping with the CAN-SPAM Act, we:
- do not use false or misleading subject lines or sender addresses;
- include our mailing address in every newsletter;
- include an unsubscribe link in every newsletter; and
- honor unsubscribe requests promptly.
To stop all email from us, use the unsubscribe link or email jmj@jamesmjackson.com, and we will remove you from all correspondence.
Changes to this policy
When we change this policy, we post the new version here and update the date at the top.
