Author’s Choice with Pamela Kyel
Please welcome Pamela to Author’s Choice.
Dear readers, here’s where you get to play along. The author will tell us two truths and one lie (ed comment –I randomized the order). At the end of the questions, we’ll reveal what really happened. Remember, we write crime fiction, so lying is in our nature . . .
Two Truths, One Lie
Truth or Lie? I play Minecraft for fun.
Truth or Lie? I’ve lived in Germany and Italy.
Truth or Lie? I speak fluent French.
Eight Quick Questions
Now for some fun insight into today’s author. Here are eight forced choice questions.
1.
First draft: longhand, keyboard, or dictation? Keyboard. When I started writing I began with longhand. Maybe I’ll try it again, but I can type faster than I can write.
2.
Plotter, pantser, or plantser (that chaotic middle ground)? I always start off with every intention of being a plotter, but somewhere along the way my characters take over and we’re winging it. So, that might fall under a plantser. J
3.
Editing as you go, or vomit draft first and fix it later? I put a lot of things down then when I’m struggling with an area I go back and edit. Reading through and editing starts my momentum back up and I’m able to launch myself into writing mode again.
4.
Writing snack: sweet, salty, or "I forget to eat"? Oooh, that’s a fun one. I like to mix my sweets with salty.
5.
Character names: meticulously researched, stolen from real life, or whatever sounds right? Some names I make up, some I use from my own family tree, and some I hear and like and mix them up. Though I live across the street from a cemetery and find inspiration there also.
6.
Writing space: coffee shop chaos, library quiet, or home sweet home? Definitely home.
7.
Reading your own work aloud: love it, tolerate it, or would rather eat glass? I’m torn between tolerating it and loving it. My audio book is a WIP. I get to it whenever I can find a second without the wind chimes going or the cat talking.
8. Happy ending, bittersweet, or gut-punch finale? I’m a happy ending kinda girl. I love to feel good when I finish reading, so that’s what I write.
About the Book
Enough about you, let’s turn to three questions about your book.
Q: If your main character in this novel showed up at your door right now, what would be the first thing they'd say to you (and would it be a complaint)?
A. Do you have any sweet tea I can have? I’m desperate.
Q: What's one thing you hope readers take away from this book?
A. My hope is that they found my book humorous. I love to laugh and it’s one thing I like to share with my readers.
Q: What question did you want me to ask, and what is your answer?
A. How did you get your start in writing? I’ve been writing for about five years. I would read while my youngest was doing online learning during covid. One day I realized, hey, I can do that. So, I set about writing a book. Which has never seen the light of day. From there I wrote another and took two years to get it ready. Long story short—I queried with no success so I chose plan B which was small publishers. My third submission met with a contract offer. This was it. I would finally hold my book in my hands.
The Big Reveal
Now let’s see how good a sleuth (or guesser) our readers are. Please reveal all.
The lie is I speak fluent French. Though, je parle un peu le français et un peu l’italiano.
I spent four years as a child living in Germany when my dad’s government job sent him there. My husband is retired military and we got to spend three years living in heaven—I mean Italy.
I play Minecraft for fun—guilty! My eleven year old got me started on it and now I play it to help me relax and as a reward for getting my work done. J
Here’s a blurb for and some links where you can find Pamela's latest:
Book Blurb
It's that time of the year again, and for Special Agent Laci Duvall, AFOSI, it means taking a break from work. The only thing is, she doesn't want to, despite everyone else telling her she needs a vacation. So, what better way to work without officially working than helping her friend, Rev, find his missing brother, Columbus, aka Lum, who is a computer programmer with NSA.
With all the earmarks of a spy movie straight out of Hollywood. Including secret surveillance cameras, bugged cars, a kidnapped dog, and Russian operatives—Laci sees it all.
Yet, there's one thing we've learned about Laci and the girls: there's no problem too big they can't solve.
